Our new Duos are compact, high performance, floor standers and have been designed specifically to suit our amplifiers. They are much clearer and have better power handling than typical 6.5” two way systems. Most opt for maximum bass extension that distorts the mid-range, makes a boomy noise, reduces power handling and increases the risk of mechanical damage.
All AVI enclosures are designed to provide bass extension appropriate to the size of drive unit and consistent with good power handling and an open and detailed mid range. Bass is tight, dynamic, detailed and extends much further than first acquaintance might suggest. Quality is paramount.
The bass driver is a new one from Peerless and has a larger voice coil and better diaphragm than the one in the Pro-Nine-Plus. Dynamic range/clarity are increased and there is greater bass extension.
The Tweeter is the same Scan-Speak as we use in all our loudspeakers and we’ve yet to find a better one, in short, we have used the best components available regardless of cost and we’ve worked hard to build them into a cost effective system AVI is always exceptional value for money.
The most difficult part of any speaker and the one that is least understood is the crossover. Both drive units are audible for an octave either side of it and unless the signal from each arrives at exactly the same time, there will be nasty artefacts that are clearly audible. This can only be achieved by using a Linkwitz Riley Filter with a Q of 0.5. Amplitude is less critical but phase is crucial and we’ve perfected a method of achieving this and making a completely seamless loudspeaker. It is this aspect of the design that makes Duos very different from most others.
Because our crossover is inaudible it enables us to better assess the quality of the drive units that we have chosen and also to use a lower crossover point. 6.5” drive units sound far better if the tweeter takes over at a lower frequency and we use 2.5kHz whilst most others prefer 3.5kHz.
The result is astonishing clarity, tremendous low frequency control, a superb stereo image and much more effective reproduction of percussive sounds.
The Duos give the best performance possible from two-way loudspeakers, there are others available, some with two bass drivers that are often very much more expensive but the advantages are dubious and they represent very poor value by comparison.
The Duos are quite definitely outstanding, they more than embarrass some ludicrously expensive alternatives and we urge you to hear them at the first opportunity.

The following is a letter received recently from customer from the USA and is completely unsolicited:
I am writing from the United States and wanted to drop you a line about your Duos. I have had your preamp for almost a year and am still amazed by how well it performs. Until recently I was using it with active monitors from another company. I have always liked the Pro Nine Pluses, but thought they may be too small for my listening room. I have had the opportunity to listen to the Trios and Brios on many occasions and have always found them absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, they are currently out of my price range. That is why I was excited to hear about the Duos. Last week your excellent distributor here in the US let me take them home for a few days and I must say you have another great product. Vocals are one thing that tends to really bother me if they sound wrong and the Duos provided one of the best vocal presentations I have ever heard. Besides giving a great impression of the singer being in the room, they are also very sweet while still being detailed and extended. Even in an 11m x 3m room the bass was pretty deep while still being tight and tuneful. Last but not least, the sound staging was the best I have ever heard in my house. Not only in terms of layering, but also in panning from side to side. I have some albums with some pretty amazing effects on them, and on a few occasions I was actually startled by the movement I heard within the soundstage. I will definitely be purchasing a pair of Duos in the near future, and I look forward to hearing the new amplifier in the coming months.
