Neutron IV Miniature Monitors

After fourteen years and many thousands of pairs sold, we'll shortly have made the last Neutron 4, we love them dearly and we shall miss them. However their replacements, the Neutron 5's are a little larger, considerably better and rather less expensive! They will be in the shops in a few weeks time and if you're looking for really excellent small speakers, these are the ones for you!
In about three months we introduce a rather special new 10" sub-woofer that not only houses its own amplifier but also a DAC, a remote controlled preamplifier and a stereo power amplifier to drive the Neutron 5's. The projected retail price is about half that of the old Integrated amplifier and Neutron 4's!
The new 2.1 system was the brainchild of ADM9 customer Marc Theodosiou in Nashville and we'd like to thank him for what we think is a piece of genius. A Serious full range Hi Fi system for less than many Integrated Amplifiers.

Neutron IVs mounted in customer's kitchen

AVI has a passion for miniature speakers, properly designed, as are Neutron IV’s; they often give far better results than much larger and more expensive ones. They are also easier to accommodate and cost less because smaller boxes are cheaper. Most of us need or prefer smaller speakers.

Twelve years ago we introduced the original Neutrons. They were a big improvement on our “Reference” LS3/5A’s but sounded similar. They had very good reviews and sold surprisingly well but we weren’t overly confident so we re-designed them as NuNeutrons. These were improved to become Neutron III’s and eventually, improved again to become the Neutron IV’s. Thanks to almost all the Hi Fi magazine, Neutrons are an established reference and have sold in thousands and continue to do so. Users include small classical record labels, Film scoring mixers, broadcasters, composers, critics and thousands of Hi Fi and Music enthusiasts the world over.

The performance of the present Neutron IV is severely limited by the average owner’s amplifier. Not so if you have our Lab Series Integrated but that is an expensive solution for a loudspeaker the price of a Neutron.

We could design better speakers if amplifiers were up to the task! In fact we did and a well-known reviewer found them too bright! He had a nice shiny Hi End one as a reference instead of something competent so was looking for a dull speaker to provide “system synergy”. The rest of us, of course, hate harshness!

ACTIVE SPEAKERS

The solution is for AVI to provide appropriate amplifiers at a competitive price. Not at all easy but we’ve done it and exceeded even our own expectations. What Hi Fi have described these speakers as the best under £1000 and that hasn’t changed, it’s just that the price now includes 150 RMS Amp-Paks bolted to the back of them! These are stunningly good and a spin off from the development of our new stereo power amplifier that is already getting rave reviews around the world.

At last owners can hear the power and control of these incredible speakers, their delicacy and the way they disappear to leave you with a “picture” of the performers, which remains stable regardless of listening position. Quite simply the biggest upgrade they’ve had to become the most remarkable speakers that most will ever hear.

AVI can upgrade all existing Neutrons, Pro-Nine-Plus and Duo or you can order Active versions new. Passive versions continue to be available.

Technical description
The Neutron IV’s comprise of a five litre, ported enclosure, fitted with a 125mm doped paper mid/woofer and a "top of the range" 25mm fabric domed tweeter. The small loss of sensitivity involved with this type of drive unit is more than offset by the greatly reduced distortion/colouration that they offer. The crossover is textbook second order and uses massive Ferrite cored inductors and polypropylene capacitors. Internal cabinet resonances are damped by a measured quantity of acoustic wadding.

The Amp-Pak comprises of an ultra low distortion, analogue bipolar transistored, high voltage amplifier tailored specifically to the requirements of our loudspeakers. Each has 150 Watts RMS output but capable of peaks of 350 whilst playing music.
