Brio Loudspeakers
Please note: We've built and shipped the last pair of Brios but we may introduce a replacement sometime in 2008
At AVI we believe that it is impossible to design amplifiers properly unless you have a full understanding of the way loudspeakers work and are capable of designing them as well. The Brios are our top of the range, hand made, individually calibrated loudspeakers and they are built to order. They are also in stock with selected distributors and on demonstration here at the factory. If you think they may suit you then please contact us to arrange a demonstration or ask your dealer to do it for you.
The Brios are 2dB more sensitive and appreciably better than the Trios but the technology is the same except where otherwise stated. It is best to read all about both to get the full picture. Special box designs can also be built for specific monitoring applications or large AV Installations.
All loudspeakers involve more compromise than electronics but the Brios use a combination of ideal sizes of the best drive units available and AVI’s unique “Active in a Passive” crossover to produce what must be amongst the very best sound made anywhere.
The enclosure is clever too in that it ensures that you get excellent results in a wide range of different acoustics. The asymmetric disposition of the mid and high frequency units means that cabinets can be turned with the units on the inside if side walls are close, or outwards on the outside in a large room, to spread the already exceptionally wide and precise stereo image.
Small loudspeakers are a compromise, they cannot be expected to reproduce the sound of large drums, organ pipes and other low frequency instruments as well the mid range without quite a lot of distortion. Designers have to juggle with all sorts of compromises to produce an acceptable result. AVI enjoys the challenge and the extraordinary success of the Neutrons shows that we are good at it. However as we have already explained, the Trios are much better than two-way loudspeakers because the work is shared between three rather than two drive units. But, in order to a produce a narrow and extremely elegant loudspeaker we have used an 8” bass drive unit and it still has to work pretty hard to reproduce everything up to 300Hz. Also the mid range output has to be reduced to match its sensitivity. The Brios use a much bigger (12”) and more expensive drive unit that gives more bass extension, more dynamic range and even better clarity. The enclosure is larger but well propertied and beautifully made and whilst most buyers will be exacting listeners who are not prepared to make any compromise in their quest for perfection, those for whom aesthetic considerations are a factor will be more than happy with the classic elegance of the Brios. We do not like the current fashion for putting mid and treble units into small enclosures because it increases distortion and raises the resonance of the mid unit, bringing it too close to the crossover and interfering with the phase response. The mid/bass crossover is the most critical part of a three-way system and errors in this region are known to cause discomfort to some listeners.
We see in Hi Fi magazines that there are “High End” loudspeakers available at all sorts of stratospheric prices and accompanied by a wide variety of, often ludicrous claims as to what they might be able to do for you. This makes the process of short-listing the best for audition extremely difficult. At AVI we design and manufacture things properly, we spare no expense to achieve the highest possible sound quality but are extremely careful not to let costs run away. If something costs money and does not benefit you, we don’t use it, in fact we are extremely careful to control our costs and to maintain fair profit margins. The result is a speaker that will equal or better the best made regardless of cost but is quite modestly priced. We do hope that you will try to hear them as soon as possible, especially if you are looking for the ultimate in sound quality.
