Important advice on selecting loudspeakers

Music comprises a continuous requirement of about 1/4 to 1/2 Watt with regular peaks of many hundreds. Low powered amplifiers (i.e. less than 100 watts or so) cannot reproduce these peaks and will be clipping much of the time. This sounds unpleasant and explains why so many sound so different and react so differently to different loudspeakers. AVI amplifiers have masses of headroom; therefore they can make almost any loudspeaker sound as good as it is able to. However most of you who are reading this probably need better better ones if you are to get the best from your AVI Amplifiers.

AVI loudspeakers all sound the same but get better as you spend more money. This means that if you buy and like our Neutrons to use with our electronics and you decide you want something bigger, the decision is easy; buy bigger AVI loudspeakers and you will be delighted. However if you are not using our electronics, the results will be far less predictable, so stick with one make.

The ADM9s change everything because they improve on any two-way passive loudspeaker made including our own. Neutrons will almost certainly continue to sell, the Duos will be offered with the new Active electronics from the ADM9s and Pro-Nine-Plus will continue as long as there is a demand for them. ADM9s will revolutionise Hi Fi because they are virtually a complete Hi FI system in a pair of loudspeakers, all they need is a digital source (a computer) and you have the very best two way Hi Fi system you can buy for the fraction of the price of separates; you save money, you save space and you get a far far better sound. Therefore if you already own AVI amplifiers, you need to buy the best of our loudspeakers if you are to get better results than the ADM9s. If you are pretty sure that you won’t want any more than two way loudspeakers, even floor standing and with two bass drivers, you’d be best to switch to ADM9s, they will be better.

Active or Passive

If you already own AVI two-way loudspeakers and would like an upgrade, then fitting our Amp-Paks will give it very cost effectively. They can be driven from the pre-outs of the Lab Series Integrated until finances permit the purchase of one of our preamplifiers. Neutrons, Pro-Nine-Plus and Duos are two-way loudspeakers of 8 Ohms nominal impedance, which means that they are very easy for any power amplifier to drive. In fact, if ours were the only two-way speakers our amplifiers had to drive, we could make much less expensive ones that sound just as good! We have, and if you buy AVI Amp-Paks, you’ll experience sound quality that normally costs at least three times as much. Used with an AVI preamp they’ll sound better than our Integrated amplifier let alone any of the usual sub 150 watts amps on offer.

AVI’s Amp-Paks are extremely powerful and sound incredibly good and if you are not intending to upgrade to our larger three way speakers, they are the most sensible option. They are also the ideal choice for Mac, PC, music and DVD based systems.

Trios and Brios

AVI’s Three-way loudspeakers are significantly better than two-way ones because their drive units are required to operate over a much narrower bandwidth where they sound best. Also because there are three instead of two drive units sharing the work, Intermodulation distortion is dramatically reduced resulting in a clearer, smoother sound and a greater sense of depth as well as width. Three-way crossovers are very much more difficult to design because the lower crossover point is right in the middle of the mid range. If it is not perfectly implemented, it will not only be audible but also produce the most offensive of all distortions, which explains why so many people opt for two-way. Most three-way speakers have unpleasant phasey effects in the mid range that few can tolerate – AVI’s do not!

The Trios and Brios have a crossover that is accurate to better than 1 degree of phase and less than 1dB of amplitude response and produce an outstanding mid range clarity and a stereo image of astonishing depth and width. You will not believe how good they are unless you hear them.

AVI designs and tests loudspeakers in a wide variety of domestic listening environments to be sure they will sound good in your room. However many shops are constructed differently from homes and sound completely different – you may hear a pair of our speakers and be very disappointed. If this happens we suggest that you insist on hearing them in your home or, if you are in the UK, why not give us a call and come and hear them here. Lunch is free!

ALREADY HAVE SPEAKERS?

If you already have speakers it is best to hang on to them until you are completely familiar with your AVI system and will be able to quickly recognise an improvement in others if you hear it. It is never a good idea to buy too many new items at a time because if you do not like the result, you will not know what is to blame.

FANTASTIC REVIEWS

Many people rush out and buy Hi Fi components on the basis of a good review and to an extent we are grateful that they do, they have made us very successful. However if we are honest we have to express grave reservations. Many indifferent products do well too and over the years we’ve had numerous calls from people in trouble and not sure who to believe because they’ve bought something that has had fantastic reviews but sounds dreadful. After all, we are selling something and the reviewers are independent. By all means audition products that get good reviews but do so with deep suspicion and make absolutely sure whatever it is, works in your system. We believe that it is better if you buy all AVI; it makes it much easier for us to help you if you are not getting good results.

CONCLUSIONS

Try to hear and buy a complete AVI system. Be wary of reviews and ask to listen to speakers in your home if they do not live up to expectations in the shop.
Mass produced speakers will sound better with AVI Amps because they are more powerful and have lower distortion than most, but will not do the system justice because they do not benefit from the extra power. Aim for serious speakers, preferably the Trios or Brios.
Remember that speakers like the Trios and the Brios are very near to the theoretical ideal – they are hard to improve on because, although it may be possible to improve one aspect of their performance, it is likely to be at the expense of another. It is true that there are all sorts of speakers on the market that cost far more and are far more elaborate but very little of all this produces a better sound.
AVI has a very simple policy; keep it simple. Build it properly and do not put anything on it that is of no benefit to the customer. Would you pay extra for fancy terminals if they made no difference to the sound? That way we can offer simple, elegant and non-intrusive loudspeakers at exceptionally low prices for the performance they offer.
