NEW FIFTH GENERATION MODEL FOR JANUARY 2001
The Positron 5s are a completely new speaker. Only in appearance are they the same as their pre-decessors. They comprise of an ultra wide range, long throw 5" bass/mid drive unit with a magnesium chassis and a doped paper diaphragm in an asymmetric 7L, ported enclosure. The tweeter is a hand made, individually selected top of the range 28mm unit with a doped fabric diaphragm.

Both drive units are significantly more expensive than would normally be seen in loudspeakers of this size and price and have been chosen for accuracy rather than "excitement". The latest Positrons have a reduced volume, asymmetric enclosure to give tighter, better defined bass and to break up internal reflections (cabinet coloration's). |

The crossover is completely new and improves the mid range clarity and smoothness as well as the already exceptional stereo image.The major benefit of using high performance/cost drive units is that their frequency response extends smoothly way beyond the chosen crossover frequency so that the phase behaviour is entirely predictable. It is not often recognised that once a drive unit's amplitude response deteriorates or rolls off, it is no longer a linear phase device. |

The crossover will have to be designed to accommodate the drive units shortcomings and cannot therefore comply with classic theory. The resulting poor phase behaviour produces a significant loss of stereo imagery.

No such problems exist with the Positrons, the filters use high quality components, are second order Linkwitz-Riley and combined with exceptionally low distortion/colouration of the drive units themselves see to it that, with a wide range of program material, |

the speakers practically disappear to produce clear, natural sounding, wide and precise sound stage.These characteristics are extremely important because they convey a sense of reality, of being present at a live event, and in doing so, will enable the listener to forget that they have a pair of loudspeakers at all and just immerse themselves in the music. |
